The Reverend Dr. George Johnson, Jr., is the blessed husband of Phyllis (Davis) Johnson of Little Rock, Arkansas for 45 years. They are the proud parents of three wonderful children – La Tasha Dionne, George Brandon, and Randal Marion; along with 8 wonderful grandchildren.
Reverend Johnson is an Ordained Elder who recently served as the proud Senior Pastor of St. Paul A.M.E Church Waco, Texas for the past 26 years. He was the guiding force in the church’s relocation to its present site eleven years ago. He is a recipient of the Tenth District (State of Texas) African Methodist Episcopal Church Clergy Person of the Year Award. During the Tenth Episcopal District (November) 2016 Planning Meeting, the Rev. Dr. George Johnson, Jr. was appointed to serve as the Paul Quinn District Presiding Elder of the Northwest Texas Annual Conference. He was born and reared in Sweet Home, Arkansas. He is the fifth child and only son of the late Rev. George Johnson, Sr. and Mrs. Carrie Johnson. He received his early years of education in his hometown of Sweet Home and attended Little Rock University before entering the U.S. Army. Rev. Johnson is a graduate of Chaminade University of Honolulu, Hawaii where he earned his Baccalaureate Degree and a Masters of Divinity Degree from Southern Methodist University. He received an Honorary Doctorate of Ministry from Paul Quinn College, and has done additional graduate work in finance. As a concerned Pastor and citizen of Waco, Rev. Johnson has served as a contributing member of numerous community boards and organizations; to name a few, the Dr. Pepper Museum Board, Quinn Campus Board, Co-Chair of the George W. Bush Presidential Library Community Taskforce, Hillcrest Baptist Hospital Review Board, Regis/St. Elizabeth Board, Central Texas Senior Ministry Board, McLennan County Heart of Texas Coliseum Board, McLennan County Youth Collaboration Board, Waco Independent School District Foundation Board, and Adopt-a-School Board. George currently serves on the Providence Hospital Foundation Board of Directors, Paul Quinn College Board of Trustees, Heart of Texas Council of Government Economic Development Corporation. He serves as the Tenth Episcopal District (State of Texas) Board of Ordained Ministry of the African Methodist Episcopal Church Chairperson, and was the Tenth Episcopal District Delegation leader to the 2012 General Conference and will serve again as the delegation leader during the 2016 General Conference of the African Methodist Episcopal Church.
While serving on Active Duty with the U.S. Army, Rev. Johnson traveled extensively here in the United States as well as abroad in Europe, Asia, South America, and the Middle East. In 2005, as a Texas National Guard Chaplain, Rev. Johnson was called to active duty and completed a 20-month deployment of duty which included 12 months in Bagram, Afghanistan. He is the recipient of a Bronze Star Medal, the Army Meritorious Service Award, several U.S. Army Accommodation Medals, U.S. Army Achievement Medals, and the Overseas Combat Ribbon. Rev. Johnson previously served as Assistant City Manager for the City of Waco. His primary responsibility was to advise the City Manager as senior supervisor of Aviation, Transit, Library, Convention/Visitors Bureau, the Zoo, Texas Ranger Hall of Fame/Museum, Information Technology, Finance, Housing, Neighborhood Services, and Economic Development. He is also a proud lifetime member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
